How it works

You've got a space. Let's make it part of the Highway.

You do not need specialist equipment, ecological qualifications or a perfect plot. Watching it develop is part of the fun.

  1. Step 1

    Join the Highway

Register your first plot when paid joining opens. Payments are currently paused while secure checkout is prepared.

  2. Step 2

    Create your plot

Tell us about the garden, balcony, allotment, school, workplace, farm, orchard, meadow, field margin, roof garden or other space you look after. Give it a name that feels yours, from Grandad's Meadow to The Office Wildlife Garden.

  3. Step 3

    Drop your pin

We use only the outward postcode and place the pin at an approximate district location, never a home address.

  4. Step 4

    Take a look around

Slow down, notice what is flowering, buzzing or hiding under a leaf, and photograph what interests you.

  5. Step 5

    Identify what you see

Use photo identification as a helpful starting point. Review every suggestion before saving it.

  6. Step 6

    Build your wildlife history

Keep a personal record of what appeared, when it visited and how your plot changes.

  7. Step 7

    Make one positive change

Plant for pollinators, add water, create shelter or simply let one small area grow.

  8. Step 8

    Share the journey

Tell the Community what you discovered, what you tried and what you learned along the way.

  9. Step 9

    Watch the Highway grow

Your plot becomes one part of a wider picture made from member plots and observations across Britain.
